Research Interests

My research is centred around development and application of tephrochronology and online resources.  This includes understanding human impact and interaction with the environment since Icelandic settlement 1200 years ago, volcanic activity and its consequences and how the morphology of tephra layers inform of us of the environment.  Other projects include establishing the relative sea-level history of north-west Iceland, ocean-transported pumice deposits found around the North Atlantic region. Mexican research involves using tephra layers to provide chronological control for late Quaternary deposits and their impact on lacustrine environments.  Online activities have included the development of Tephrabase in 1995 and design and management of the NABO website and also the RSGS Images for All Project.
